Dark Currents is Splinter’s third full-length album, with an upcoming release on August 23, 2024 through Cantaloupe Music.

Tall Grass (2022) by Michael Gordon *
Antenna Studies (2018) by Paula Matthusen *
*Written for Splinter Reeds

The album opens with Michael Gordon's majestic "Tall Grass," which cascades upward into undulating waves of melody before it spreads out on a moody canvas, surging with tension and emotion. By contrast, Paula Matthussen's "Antenna Studies" combines ambient soundscapes and found sounds; as the musicians quietly tease their instruments with breath control and percussive pad strikes, a somber melodic figure gradually begins to take shape. Taken together, these two 20-minute performances propel the listener forward on an ever-changing journey, by turns hypnotic, ecstatic, surreal and spooky, that tests the pre-conceived boundaries of modern chamber music.

”Dark Currents feels like a highwater mark—a recording that finally reveals the fullest diapason of Splinter Reeds’ dazzling versatility and curiosity.” (-Peter Margasak, The Best Contemporary Classical Music on Bandcamp)

”It’s a most exquisite moment to have Antenna Studies included in this album and performed so extraordinarily by Splinter Reeds, featured alongside Michael Gordon's beautiful work. And the unique format of the release, both in ATMOS and in stereo, gels with the spirit of Antenna Studies as well, which investigates the range of contexts and spaces we may encounter with the sounds and signals we send, hear and organize in time.” (-Paula Matthusen)

Hypothetical Islands is available through Amazon, iTunes, Bandcamp, or direct from New Focus Recordings. Or, come to a concert and buy a physical album from the band.

The program includes works by Matthew Shlomowitz and Sky Macklay from “Hypothetical Islands,” the impressive album that the group issued in March..” (-Steve Smith, The New Yorker)

A reed quintet with sensibilities that are over ridingly post punk as they delve into progressive jazz and classical realms, they fearlessly tread on shaky grounds without losing their footing. Untamed stuff for wild ears, when the wheel don't come off, you know you're in good hands and this journey is an easy bet for the sonically adventurous.” (Chris Spector, Midwest Record)
